Having followed many of the near misses in the US in recent years, I find US ATC procedures scary. I always thought it was just a matter of time.

I dont know if this has already been mentioned. I just read that that same almost happened the night before too. Republic Airways Flight 4514 Had to go around to avoid colliding with a helicopter.

This visual separation at night thing is bananas. Heli confirms he is visual with RJ, but ATC is relying on him actually having made visual with the correct aircraft.
