Just wondering: does anyone know if a Concorde driver ever flew the Koncordski (Tu-144) ?

The TU144D used in the 1990's as a joint NASA/Russian experiment was a different beast altogether however, with far better engines and systems, but as far as I am aware the only western pilots to fly it were American chaps
I wasn't aware of the significant upgrades - devised into the tune of $300mn - that where applied to this airframe. Your remarks made me read some very interesting articles on this project.

Supersonic - it was certainly no sailplane and an ability to increase drag wasn't required.
Makes me wonder... In the event of a complete loss of thrust at Mach 2 (say fuel contamination) would the deceleration be significant ? If so I guess the fuel redistribution / pumping to maintain acceptable CG would become interesting...

Airbus, on the contrary, returned the Type Certificate to the CAA/DGAC and thereby basically "washed their hands" of Concorde. Even if they were willing to transfer the necessary technical information to a third party, it's extremely unlikely they still would be capable of doing so.
I have always been of the possibly not substantiated opinion that all was done to make sure she would never fly again. I fully understand the significant costs incurred by EADS to provide maintenance but it would have been possible to nicely package all remaining spares and technical documentation, not mentioning the reckless butchering of many airframes.

Opinions and remarks like yours really belong on forums like "SCG" or the comments columns of tabloids....
Sorry I you feel in any way offended - certainly not my intent.

But there was no intent to ever fly any of these aircraft again
Well the end result is somewhat similar to what I just proposed.

I accept that the actions undertaken where just the consequences of the decision not to fly one the finest piece of human engineering to date ever. Although - as you so eloquently put it - I certainly have no idea what I'm speaking of I still feel that this decision has been rather harsh and I'm to date not fully convinced that all alternative where fully explored.

Just my 2c anyway

I remember that the Concorde was extensively used both by the French and UK government for state travel. Where those "just" another charter flight or was it more involved (cabin layout, routing, security, etc) ?

Brief video, taken yesterday (Oct 9, 2010) of a landing on LHR 27L, with the new three-projector visual display.
Wow... quite impressive !

11) At what airfied were the first BA crew base training details held?
No idea.
Was it Brize Norton, or Casablanca?
Oh I certainly vividly remember as teenager witnessing AF doing all sorts of training approaches, including touch and go & 3 engine takeoffs in Casa !

Performance would be one issue... Delta Golf (and 01, who went to Mach 2.23) basically "ran out of steam" at that speed.
Just wondering was that the maximum speed "in" the design ? I understand that "the higher & the colder = the faster" was the key to the performance and that the Mach +/- 2.0 cruise was implied by limiting altitude to FL 600 in order to mitigate cabin depressurization consequences. I guess there where also thermal issues but was, say, Mach 2.2 @ FL700 "warmer" than Mach 2.0 @ FL600 ?

Also wondering what was the max altitude ? Was high altitude stall (for the lack of a better word) ever experimented during tests or training ?

Now you may not believe this, but 101 could fly faster than the production aircraft because she (101) leaked like a sieve!
Just love this thread - thanks CliveL and all involved

Concorde question

For what it's worth I vividly remember Concorde flying circuits in Marrakech (AF training)... Was quite a sight!

Regarding the fuel burn differences would you have a ballpark number to quote?
.1%? 1%? More?

Regarding your first question I don't see any regular routing where this would have happened. I think there would not be any technical impossibility, though.
For the second part I guess somewhere above the Adriatic? But would be curious to know too...

There have been ample discussion about it, including here. I think one can safely say that the "final straw" was the rupture and ignition of tank 5 after V1. Their fate was sealed after that.
